The wave of strikes by 150,000 U.S. auto workers in September, now in its fourth week, shows no sign of abating and is getting worse. The auto industry is the largest manufacturing sector in the United States, and because the industrial chain is large and complex, the general strike will inevitably have an impact on the American auto industry and economic operation. In addition to the auto industry, there have been large-scale strikes in several industries this year because of high inflation, labor shortages and unequal distribution.
The strike wave has widened. Another automaker in the United States has shut down after workers at three major automakers called a strike. On the evening of October 8, local time, the United Auto Workers union said that about 4,000 workers oppose the preliminary agreement reached with Mack Trucks and are scheduled to go on strike on the 9th. Mack Trucks is one of the leading manufacturers of heavy - and medium-duty trucks in the United States, delivering 27,000 in 2022 and 16,000 in the first half of this year. The announcement said the strike action would involve 4,000 Mack Trucks employees. The move follows a UAW strike against Detroit's Big Three automakers, Ford, General Motors and Strangis, involving about 25,000 workers.
Meanwhile, US hospitals, pharmacies and clinics are now among the areas hit by strike action, following strikes by autoworkers and Hollywood writers. On October 4, local time, about 75,000 medical workers from the Kaiser Medical Group union coalition in the United States held a strike action, which is also the largest medical strike in recent U.S. history.
The ongoing strikes are the result of a tight labor market and rising costs of living caused by high inflation. About 3.62 million workers have gone on strike so far this year, compared with 36,600 at the same time two years ago, according to Cornell University's School of Industrial Relations.
Losses have reached record levels. The strike has already caused more damage to the U.S. economy than any other auto strike this century. The last time the contract was resigned, in September 2019, the UAW led a 40-day strike against GM that involved 48,000 workers at more than 50 plants, cost GM more than $3.6 billion in lost profits, and coincided with a single quarter of recession in Michigan. By the end of the third week of the strike, the cost of the union strikes at Ford, General Motors and Strangis had reached $5.5 billion, surpassing the previous record of $4 billion in total losses, and the economy was expected to take a further hit.
Inflation adds fuel to the fire. As one of the pillar industries for a long time, the automotive industry accounts for 3% of the U.S. GDP and employs about 1 million people, including parts suppliers, and has a self-evident impact on the U.S. economy. If things heat up and turn into a general strike, the 146,000 union members at Ford, GM and Strangis will come into play. In this scenario, quarterly GDP could take a hit of 1.7 percentage points.
A wider strike could lead to more shutdowns at US car plants, putting pressure on the Labour market and pushing up new car prices. In the long run, these union demands of "pay rise, reduced working hours, and increased benefits" will affect the US economy and the world economy from another side.
In addition, affected by the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, rising oil prices or will bring inflationary pressure from the cost side, energy commodities, air ticket prices have rebounded significantly, the United States anti-inflation or face new obstacles.
Against the backdrop of the increasingly fierce competition and numerous challenges in the global automotive industry, Ford Motor Company has made a significant and highly impactful decision - it plans to lay off 4,000 employees in Europe in an attempt to significantly cut costs and seek new opportunities and space for the sustainable development of the enterprise.
