《柳叶刀》等全球11份著名医学杂志的编辑罕见联合撰写社论警告，发生核灾难的风险显著上升，呼吁所有核武器国家采取紧急行动消除核武库。
法新社报道，这篇刊登在全球100多份医学杂志的社论呼吁医护人员提醒国家领导人与国民，核武器对公共卫生构成的威胁。
社论引述研究数据指，即便是一场“有限”使用核武的战争，仅动用全球1万3000件核武器的250件，也会导致1亿2000人立即丧命；核战争引发的全球饥荒将对20亿人构成威胁。
有鉴于俄罗斯一再威胁会对乌克兰使用核武，朝鲜则持续进行核导弹试验，国际防止核战争医生组织前主席、也是撰写这篇社论的作者之一的赫尔范德（Ira Helfand）相信，发生核战争的可能性真实存在。
这篇社论就写道：“核武国家必须在消灭我们之前，销毁其核武库”。
