Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that if Hamas does not release the hostages by noon Saturday, the cease-fire in the Gaza Strip will end and the army will continue fighting Hamas.
Following Netanyahu's ultimatum Tuesday, Hamas issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to the cease-fire and accusing Israel of breaking it.
Israel's announcement came after Netanyahu met with several key ministers, including the defense, foreign and national security ministers, who he said fully supported the ultimatum.
After nearly 16 months of war, Hamas has been gradually releasing the hostages since the first phase of the ceasefire began on January 19, but announced on Monday that it was postponing a release scheduled for Saturday until further notice because of Israeli violations.
"If Hamas does not return the hostages by noon on Saturday, the cease-fire will end and the IDF will resume heavy fighting until Hamas is finally defeated," Netanyahu said.
It was not clear if Mr. Netanyahu meant Hamas should release all hostages it holds in Gaza or only the three it was scheduled to release Saturday under a cease-fire agreement.
Reuters asked the prime minister for comment on the remarks, but Netanyahu's office did not immediately respond.
