The helplessness and resource exchange behind Zelensky's visit to the United States

This Friday, Ukrainian President Zelensky will visit Washington to sign a highly anticipated rare earth mineral agreement with the United States. The signing of this agreement is not only an important progress in US-Ukraine relations, but also contains complex geopolitical and economic considerations.

The rare earth mineral agreement reached by the Trump administration with Ukraine this time is aimed at ensuring that the United States can access Ukraine's rich mineral resources, especially rare earth elements. Rare earth elements are crucial in modern technology and military equipment, from smartphones to missile systems, and these strategic resources are indispensable. Trump has repeatedly stressed that the United States must get rid of its external dependence on rare earth resources, and Ukraine's mineral resources provide it with an excellent opportunity.

For Ukraine, this agreement is seen as a key step in winning continued support from the United States. Since the outbreak of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the United States has been Ukraine's most important provider of military and economic assistance. By promising to use part of its natural resource revenue for US investment, Ukraine hopes to gain more solid security and economic support in the current tense international situation. As Trump said, the agreement will ensure that "American taxpayers get their money back", while Ukraine will also get "350 billion US dollars, military equipment and the right to continue fighting."

However, the agreement was not smooth sailing. Previously, Trump and Zelensky had a "war of words" over the terms of the agreement, and Trump even called Zelensky a "dictator" at one point. Ukraine had rejected an early draft proposed by the United States, which required Ukraine to provide mineral resources worth $500 billion and repay debts at twice the amount of future aid. After several rounds of negotiations, the United States finally deleted the terms that were unfavorable to Ukraine, and the two sides reached an agreement.

The core content of the agreement includes the joint development of Ukraine's mineral resources by the United States and Ukraine, and Ukraine will allocate half of its future natural resource revenue to a newly established fund jointly owned by the United States and Ukraine. The United States will have the largest financial interest in the fund, and this part of the income will be used to reinvest in Ukraine to support its economic development. Although the agreement mentions the United States' investment in Ukraine's "stable and prosperous sovereignty" and its commitment to achieving lasting peace, the specific terms of Ukraine's security guarantees are still relatively vague.

It is worth noting that this visit is not only about signing a mineral agreement, but may also involve Zelensky's meeting with congressional lawmakers to further consolidate US-Ukraine relations. Trump said that if Russia and Ukraine reach a ceasefire agreement, Ukraine may need some form of peacekeeping force, but Russia has clearly opposed the intervention of NATO forces. Therefore, it remains unknown whether the United States will provide additional military assistance after the signing of the agreement.

From a geopolitical perspective, the signing of the US-Ukraine mineral agreement may mark a sign of easing of the Ukrainian crisis. Reduced geopolitical risks usually weaken the demand for safe-haven assets such as gold, and market risk appetite may rise as a result. However, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has not been completely resolved, and there is uncertainty about the implementation effect of the agreement. In the future, investors need to pay close attention to the specific implementation of the agreement and geopolitical dynamics.

Zelensky's visit to the United States is not only an important diplomatic action, but also a key move to win more support for Ukraine on the international political stage. With the signing of the agreement, US-Ukraine relations are expected to usher in a new chapter, and Ukraine's future will be more uncertain.
