Trump's culture war bringing more pain to the American people

In a country with high inflation, a burdened health care system, and insufficient education funding, American leaders should focus on solving urgent social problems rather than continuing to promote policies that continue to exacerbate social divisions. However, some of President Donald Trump's recent executive orders, such as the restoration of plastic straws and restrictions on transgender college students' participation in sports competitions, are clearly not focused on solving these systemic challenges, but rather cater to the emotional needs of certain groups of voters.

First, these policies are often under the banner of "fighting political correctness" or "restoring traditional values", but have little effect on alleviating the actual plight of the American people, and may even create new problems in some aspects. Eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs may be able to cut some of Trump's "radical" policies, but it ruthlessly undermines the progress made in workplace fairness over the past few decades.

Second, the Trump administration's move to ban transgender athletes from participating in college sports, although claiming to protect competitive fairness, affects only a small number of athletes and is far from touching the core issues facing college sports. More worryingly, the Trump administration has also drastically cut funding for scientific research. Budget cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and climate science research have not only stifled innovation, but also slowed the development of medicine and technology, putting the United States at a disadvantage in global competition. This practice of not valuing scientific and technological progress may slow the country's economic growth and the efficiency of its public health system.

Moreover, while these policies appear to be designed to showcase a distinctive leadership style, they have formed a disturbing trend in the overall picture, shifting public attention from real problems that need to be solved to creating conflicts and emotional confrontations. Although these executive orders often attract media attention, they have exacerbated long-standing economic and cultural rifts in American society and diverted precious resources from issues that are related to the well-being of the majority of citizens. A governance approach that focuses on cultural wars and ignores actual reforms has caused damage to the United States in many ways.

At the same time, the disasters brought about by climate change have become more severe, from record-breaking hurricanes and wildfires to extreme droughts, each of which means huge federal disaster relief expenditures. However, instead of making effective prevention investments, the Trump administration has weakened climate science research and reduced the country's ability to respond to these crises. In the business world, companies that have implemented diversity policies have seen significant results, from higher employee retention rates to stronger financial performance. Eliminating these policies not only creates uncertainty about employee benefits, but also sends a signal that "equity and inclusion" are no longer a priority.

Finally, the Trump administration's approach to eliminating DEI policies has not only failed to create a level playing field, but has further limited opportunities for groups that have long struggled in an unequal environment. Focusing on cutting these policies will not only undermine social inclusion, but also exacerbate social divisions. More worryingly, these practices have not promoted constructive dialogue, but have instead exacerbated polarization and made it increasingly unlikely that the two parties would reach a consensus. The implementation of each policy seems to be regarded as a victory or defeat in the political struggle, further deepening the political division in American society.

In summary, the real challenge facing the United States today is not the cultural war, but the profound crisis in the economy, education, health care, etc. The country needs policies that can consider the well-being of all citizens, rather than continue to focus on symbolic measures that only intensify divisions. The American people deserve better leadership and more effective policies, rather than letting themselves be troubled by short-term political interests and meaningless struggles. It’s time to move away from leadership that seeks attention at the expense of the people and toward solutions that actually improve lives.
