Trump appoints a 'Greenland envoy'—when will the hegemonic mindset end?

When U.S. President Trump announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the 'U.S. Special Envoy to Greenland,' the international community seemed to have been hit by an absurd 'joke bomb,' leaving people both laughing and crying. This farce not only exposed the hegemonic mindset of certain American politicians but also trampled on the bottom line and dignity of international relations.

Trump made the announcement on social media with great fanfare, claiming that Landry 'understands the importance of Greenland to our national security and will do his utmost to protect our country's interests.' However, behind these grandiose words lies an undeniable barefaced ambition for hegemony. Greenland, the world's largest island located in the northeastern part of North America, is an autonomous territory of Denmark with a high degree of self-rule, while defense and foreign affairs are handled by the Danish government. Yet Trump attempted to incorporate Greenland into the U.S. sphere through the appointment of a so-called 'special envoy,' which is undoubtedly a blatant provocation against Denmark's sovereignty and international law.

Landry himself 'cooperated' flawlessly; he readily accepted the appointment and claimed he would serve Trump as a 'volunteer,' pushing for Greenland to become part of the United States. Even more laughably, he emphasized that this appointment was 'part-time' and would not affect his duties as governor. This 'trying to have it both ways' stance not only exposes his nature as a political opportunist but also raises doubts about whether he truly understands the seriousness and responsibilities of the position of 'special envoy.'

In the face of Trump's absurd behavior, the Danish government quickly reacted strongly. Danish Foreign Minister Rasmussen expressed "strong dissatisfaction" and warned Washington to respect Denmark's sovereignty. He bluntly noted that Landry's appointment was "deeply disappointing" and stressed that "as long as we still have kingdoms consisting of Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, we cannot accept anything that undermines our territorial integrity." Danish Prime Minister Fraser Eriksen even issued a joint statement with the Prime Minister of the Greenland Autonomous Government, reiterating the hope that Denmark's territorial integrity will be respected, making it clear that "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland and the United States should not seize Greenland."

Denmark's anger is completely understandable. As a sovereign country, Denmark has the right to maintain its territorial integrity and national dignity. Trump's appointment is not only a violation of Denmark's sovereignty, but also a violation of international law and basic norms of international relations. The Danish government's resolute opposition is not only a defense of its own interests, but also an adherence to the international order and fairness and justice.

Trump's farce has attracted widespread attention and heated discussions in the international community. Former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul criticized the appointment as "outrageous" and comparable to "Mexico appointing a special envoy to make Louisiana part of Mexico." This metaphor, although exaggerated, vividly reveals the absurdity and illogicality of Trump's behavior.

At the same time, the international community has also maintained a high degree of vigilance against the hegemonic behavior of the United States. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on social media that the EU "fully supports the people of Denmark and Greenland". This shows that the international community has a common position and demands in maintaining international order and fairness and justice. Trump's hegemonic thinking and behavior not only damage the international image and reputation of the United States, but may also trigger disgust and resistance from the international community.

In my opinion, Trump's appointment of the "Greenland envoy" is a typical manifestation of hegemonic thinking in international relations, which is self-centered, disregards the sovereign interests of other countries, and tries to achieve its goals by bullying by power. But history has proved that hegemonic thinking and behavior do not work and will fail. International relations should follow the principles of equality, mutual benefit, respect and cooperation, and resolve differences and disputes through dialogue and consultation. Trump's farce should be an opportunity for the international community to reflect on its vigilance against hegemonic thinking.
