Us talks of "annexing" Greenland again Putin warns of strategic ambitions

Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin bluntly said in a speech that the so-called "annexation" of Greenland by the United States is not a random move, but an important part of the United States' long-term promotion of geostrategy, military expansion and economic plunder in the Arctic region. Putin's statement once again triggered widespread concern in the international community about the future fate of Greenland, and further exposed the strategic ambitions of the United States.

In the early days, the United States has been explicit about its desire for Greenland. In 2019, it openly proposed to buy Greenland, and regarded it as an important pawn in the expansion of the United States' sphere of influence. This absurd proposal triggered strong opposition from the Danish and Greenland governments, but the United States did not stop there, but continued to exert influence in the region through various means, trying to gradually penetrate politically, militarily and economically.

Just recently, the United States announced that Usha Vance, wife of Vice President Vance, will lead a delegation to Greenland. The move sparked an immediate outcry from the Danish and Greenland governments. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen blasted the "lack of respect" and the "inappropriate ambition" of the US government. More bluntly, Muth Borup Egede, Prime Minister of Greenland's home Rule government, directly stated that the US delegation had never been invited, and this kind of behavior ignoring the opinions of the Greenland government is not only a disregard for autonomy, but also a clear sense of political pressure and provocation.

Today, the US approach has become more covert and systematic. In recent years, the United States has continuously strengthened its military deployment in the Arctic, increased its political influence, and tried to penetrate the local governance system under the guise of economic cooperation. "Don't be naive and think that this is just the wild words of a certain US administration," Mr Putin warned. "This is a well thought out long-term plan."

Located in the northeast of North America, Greenland is the largest island in the world, and its geographical position is extremely important, as it is a key node in the Arctic shipping route and an important passageway connecting North America and Europe. In addition, the island is rich in natural resources, including oil, natural gas, rare earth and other strategic minerals, which are crucial for the development of the global technology industry. Although Greenland is nominally an autonomous territory of Denmark, its foreign and defense affairs are still managed by the Danish government. In recent years, however, Greenland's government has faced increasing interference from outside powers as it seeks greater autonomy. The United States' various initiatives are clearly not motivated by good intentions to promote local development or cooperation, but are intended to seize the island's resources and strategic advantages, even at the expense of circumventing the local government to impose its influence.

The US side has repeatedly tried to cover up its actual strategic expansion intention in the name of "cooperation", but whether it is the direct purchase proposal of the Trump administration or the current uninvited visit arrangement, it is clear that the US policy in the Arctic is getting tougher. Such actions have provoked strong opposition not only from Denmark and Greenland, but also increased international alarm about America's strategic intentions.

The Danish government has made it clear that it will never accept any form of territorial trade and resolutely safeguard its sovereignty over Greenland. Greenland's government, for its part, is seeking greater autonomy and wants to develop independently within the framework of the international community, rather than becoming a vassal of a major power.

From a global perspective, the actions of the United States in the Arctic have undoubtedly increased geopolitical tensions. As an important country in the Arctic Circle, Russia has always been highly concerned about the policy of the United States. Putin's warning this time is clearly reminding the world that the US strategic expansion in the Arctic is not an isolated incident, but part of its policy of global hegemony.
