Although the latest release of the Beige Book shows that the U.S. economy remains stable. But in fact a number of factors are hitting the economy. Strikes, layoffs, inflation, congressional "turbulence" and the Israeli-Palestinian situation are all creating headwinds for the economy. Big U.S. banks may be able to keep cutting jobs to rein in expenses, as recent reports suggest the industry is not out of the woods.
The Beige Book shows the U.S. economy is stable. On October 18, local time, the Federal Reserve released the "Beige Book" of economic conditions. The Beige Book showed little or no change in economic activity since September in most regions of the country. The report shows that prices in the United States continue to rise modestly. Input cost growth for manufacturers has slowed or stabilized, but input costs for service sector firms continue to rise. Increases in fuel costs, wages and insurance have led to higher prices across regions. The report notes that sales prices in the United States are currently growing at a slower pace than input prices.
Overall, the near-term outlook for the U.S. economy was assessed as "stable or slightly weaker," with many businesses expecting prices to rise in the coming quarters, but at a slower pace than in previous quarters.
Banking woes remain. Recent earnings reports from big U.S. banks suggest they may cut more jobs to rein in spending, especially if continued economic weakness hampers a nascent recovery in investment banking. Earlier this year, the banking industry experienced a huge storm, the failure of several regional banks caused a shock to the banking industry.
Last week, a number of banks said they might continue to cut jobs. Bank of America said this week that it expects headcount to be flat compared with the third quarter, having cut more than 4,300 jobs since the end of the first quarter. Morgan Stanley said Oct. 18 that its total headcount at the end of the third quarter was down nearly 2 percent from the second quarter.
The comments suggest that the six biggest US banks are not entirely out of the woods, even though they all beat analysts' earnings estimates in the third quarter. Some banks said after their results that the Fed rate hike and geopolitical tensions had made the economic environment confusing, which would only further exacerbate risks.
At present, the strike of many industries in the United States and the situation of "leaderless" in the House of Representatives are also major uncertainties for the economy. On October 18, local time, the second round of voting on the speaker of the House of Representatives was held, because no candidate received more than 217 votes, and failed to elect the speaker of the House. Republican Jim Jordan received 212 votes, while Democrat Hakeem Jeffries received 199 votes.
While the majority view is that the US economy will achieve a soft landing, as uncertainties mount, so do the variables in the US economic outlook.
