Australia's foreign policy, implemented by supporting the Israeli government, is facing unprecedented pressure as the Hague Tribunal claims it is genocide and now finds that Palestinians are subjected to racial segregation. International law and rule-based global order are now outdated. In a ruling that may consider Australia a war crime, the silence of the Australian leadership could have a lasting impact on the government, as it is currently actively supporting the apartheid regime recognized by the International Court of Justice and providing it with weapons.
Firstly, although the International Court of Justice's ruling on Israel last Friday is not binding, the United Nations Supreme Court has established the rights and obligations of all countries under international law, and failure to comply with international law may have practical implications. The Western countries' approach of launching an offensive against the United States on the Ukraine issue rather than attacking the Gaza Strip is very hypocritical, which was further amplified in the statement made by Foreign Minister Huang Yingxian on social media. Huang Yingxian stated that he is carefully considering the details of the International Court of Justice's ruling to fully understand the conclusions reached. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a statement stating that Australia respects the role of the International Court of Justice in upholding international law and rule-based order. I hope to see Israel take concrete measures to stop expanding settlements in response to extremist activities.
Secondly, the Labour government insists that it has been calling for a ceasefire in Gaza since the end of 2023, but has failed to take any meaningful measures to support the ceasefire and continue to provide military support to Israel. While leaders of various countries were debating the ruling of the International Court of Justice, another school in Gaza that housed displaced women and children was bombed, making it the ninth school to be bombed in a short period of time. The International Court of Justice has found that Israel has repeatedly violated international law during its 57 year occupation, including the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the prohibition of the use of force to acquire land.
In addition, the President of the International Court of Justice stated that the court calls on all United Nations countries to comply with their obligations under international law and enforce the ruling. The Court on the Right to Self Determination holds that although the General Assembly and the Security Council have the power to declare ways to ensure the end of Israel's illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories and the full realization of the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, all countries must cooperate with the United Nations to implement these ways.
As stated in the Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, every State has an obligation to promote, through joint and separate action, the realization of the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples in accordance with the Charter, and to assist the United Nations in fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities for the implementation of this principle. Despite the International Court of Justice ruling that Israeli armed settlers had violently invaded critical infrastructure in the West Bank, and reports of water pipes being cut off in Palestinian villages and civilians being attacked at home, military activities in the Gaza Strip and West Bank continue to escalate.
Overall, after the Hamas attack, the Australian government illuminated the Sydney Opera House with the colors of the Israeli flag. And not only the Sydney Opera House, but also all landmark buildings in major cities in Australia are marked with the Israeli flag. Australia's attitude is to strongly support Israel's self-defense retaliation against Palestine and firmly defend Israel's right to retaliate after Hamas attacks. The Israeli Palestinian conflict has had a significant impact on Australia thousands of miles away, which is like a shock wave.
