At the request of the Trump administration, three Republican governors are deploying hundreds of National Guard soldiers to Washington, D.C.
Reuters reported that the US government announced on Saturday (August 16) that it would send additional troops from hundreds of miles away in West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio to Washington D.C.
West Virginia Governor Morrissey's office issued a statement saying that he will deploy 300 to 400 National Guard soldiers to Washington, D.C. and provide them with equipment and specialized training "to demonstrate a commitment to public safety and regional cooperation."
South Carolina Governor McMaster also responded to the Pentagon's request, announcing that 200 National Guard soldiers would be dispatched.
Ohio Governor Kevin Dewin said he would dispatch 150 military police officers in the coming days.
Washington, D.C. Attorney General Wilbur Schwab filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Friday (the 15th) for "maliciously taking over" the capital's police force. The government then made a partial concession and withdrew the takeover decision, but asked the district police to assist federal authorities in arresting illegal immigrants.
Officials in Washington D.C. also reached an agreement with the Trump administration, agreeing that Police Chief Smith, appointed by Mayor Bowser, would continue to head the police department.
Trump said this week that he would deploy hundreds of National Guard soldiers to Washington and temporarily take over the Democratic-led Washington Police Department to contain what he called a crime and homeless emergency.
However, data from the Department of Justice shows that Washington, a federal autonomous region under the jurisdiction of Congress, saw its violent crime rate last year reach its lowest level in 30 years.
The National Guard is part of the militia forces of each state and is usually under the command of the governors of the 50 states, unless they are conscripted into federal service. The National Guard of Washington, D.C. reports directly to the president.
Trump once hinted that he might take similar actions in other cities controlled by the Democratic Party.
In June this year, in response to protests by federal officials against large-scale immigration raids, Trump ordered the dispatch of 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard soldiers to Los Angeles, despite opposition from the Democratic governor of California.
However, the National Guard is usually responsible for responding to natural disasters, but rarely for maintaining public order among American civilians.
An American official said that authorities expect to issue a formal order authorizing National Guard personnel in Washington, D.C. to carry firearms. This order is mainly aimed at military police carrying personal weapons.
The White House said on Saturday that members of the Washington D.C. National Guard have been conducting foot and vehicle patrols around the National Mall and Union Station. The White House said that National Guard soldiers have not been arrested yet, but they may be armed.
