U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Sheila Harris says she would abolish college degree requirements for certain federal jobs if she is elected president in November.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on Friday, Harris said the United States should recognize pathways to success beyond college, such as apprenticeships and technical courses.
"As president, I will eliminate unnecessary degree requirements for federal jobs and provide more job opportunities for those without a four-year degree," Harris said.
A degree does not necessarily indicate a person's talent, she said, adding: "I would challenge private companies to do the same."
Both Harris and his Republican rival, former President Donald Trump, have made various economic promises to appeal to voters. Ms. Harris said she would work for Congress to pass a middle-class tax cut. Trump has promised to eliminate all overtime taxes if he is re-elected president. Both support eliminating the small fee tax.
Meanwhile, pro-Palestinian American demonstrators have been demanding an end to the war in the Gaza Strip for months and for the US government to impose an arms embargo on Israel.
Harris reiterated his support for an Israeli-Palestinian ceasefire and the release of hostages.
Harris is in a tight race with Trump. Observers say if Muslims and Arab-Americans, who overwhelmingly voted Democratic in the last presidential election, abstain from voting, it could hurt Harris's chances.
