US President Trump complained about the progress of trade negotiations between the United States and Japan and threatened to impose a tax on Japanese rice.
According to reports from AFP and Reuters, Trump posted on social media on Monday (June 30) that Japan's reluctance to import US rice indicates that "the attitude of various countries towards the United States has become arrogant."
Trump wrote on Truth Social: "I have great respect for Japan. They refuse to buy our rice despite the severe shortage they are facing."
In other words, we will send them a letter and we are very willing to continue our trading partnership with them for many years to come.
Japan's chief tariff negotiator, Ryo Masamasa Akasawa, said Monday that Japan will continue to cooperate with the United States to reach trade agreements while defending Japan's national interests.
Trump said last week that the US government would send letters to several countries before July 9, informing them of higher tariff rates. At that time, the reciprocal tariffs of various countries will be restored from 10% to the higher rate between 11% and 50% announced by Trump on April 2nd.
The grace period for reciprocal tariffs in the United States will expire on July 9. White House spokesman Levitt said Monday that Trump will meet with his trade team to determine reciprocal tariff rates for those countries that "are unwilling to sit down for sincere negotiations." On the other hand, US Treasury Secretary Jason Bessent said that the White House's goal is to finalize trade agreements with US partners after the July 4th Independence Day holiday.
