Short video app TikTok is reportedly planning layoffs this week, disbanding its global user operations. The cuts will affect a large proportion of the division's 1,000 employees, with the remaining staff being reassigned to other teams.
The Information reported Tuesday that TikTok plans to lay off employees in its operations, content and marketing departments this week, and that affected employees will be notified Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
It's not clear how many people will be fired, but an unnamed employee said TikTok is disbanding its global user operations team, and those who aren't fired will join other departments, or nearly 1,000 people.
TikTok has not yet responded to the news of the layoffs. TikTok disclosed last year that it had 7,000 employees in the US alone.
CNN reported on Wednesday, citing TikTok employees with knowledge of the layoff plan, that TikTok's layoff plan has been in the works for nearly a year, and the layoff has nothing to do with the "sell or ban" new law TikTok is facing in the United States.
US President Joe Biden signed a new law on April 24, giving ByteDance until January 19 to sell TikTok or face a ban.
