More than 80% of the 206 patients with kidney dysfunction who took Kobayashi Pharmaceutical's health care products containing monaskoji did not improve their kidney function after treatment, and some patients suffered systemic failure after hospitalization, according to a survey released by the Japanese Society of Nephrology on Sunday (June 30).

More than half of the patients who took red yeast were diagnosed with "Fanconi syndrome," a condition in which the kidney's tubules are damaged and unable to reabsorb components needed by the body, Kyodo News reported, as the Japanese Society of Nephrology held its general conference in Yokohama on Sunday.

According to the survey, after kidney biopsies performed on 110 people, 47% showed tubular interstitial nephritis, 28% showed tubular necrosis, and seven required dialysis treatment, of which two are still receiving treatment.

After follow-up, proteinuria was found to be basically improved, but 90 out of 105 follow-up patients reported no improvement in renal filtering function, which is similar to chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Professor Shintaka Inokaka of Osaka University, vice president of the association, who announced the results of the survey, said, It is presumed that if the kidney is severely damaged, it will be difficult to recover.

The report also mentions the death of a woman over 90 years old. In December, the woman was admitted to hospital after being diagnosed with Fanconi syndrome after presenting with symptoms of fever and burnout. Although her kidney function began to improve after treatment, her food intake and muscle strength deteriorated rapidly, causing complications and she died in February this year.
