Gun deaths among children in the United States are at a record high, according to a new study published by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The study, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in the journal Pediatrics, used mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It found that 4,752 children died from gun-related injuries in 2021, the latest year for which data are available, up from 4,368 in 2020 and 3,390 in 2019.
Since 2020, gun violence has been the leading cause of death among children in the United States.
This year, three children and three teachers were killed in a school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee. After the incident, Tennessee lawmakers convened a special session on public safety, and the study was released.
Black children account for about 67 percent of gun homicides, while white children account for about 78 percent of gun-assisted suicides.
