An Indian diplomat was expelled, accusing Trudeau of undermining India-Canada bilateral relations

Recently, the diplomatic tension between India and Canada has escalated again, with the focus on the expulsion of an Indian diplomat in Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, the senior Indian envoy in Canada. After being expelled, Verma maintained his innocence and publicly accused Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau of undermining the India-Canada bilateral relationship. This incident not only intensified the tense atmosphere between the two countries but also drew widespread attention from the international community.

The incident can be traced back to June last year, when Canadian Sikh leader Gurmeet Singh was shot dead in British Columbia, Canada. Singh had long advocated for the independence of certain regions in India and was listed as a terrorist by the Indian government in July 2020. However, his murder sparked a diplomatic dispute between Canada and India.

The Canadian government accused Indian diplomats of being involved in Singh's murder, which prompted a strong reaction from India. The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs firmly denied the accusation, accusing Canada of "ridiculous slander" and claiming that the Canadian government's accusation was a means to achieve political goals. As the dispute escalated, Canada and India announced the expulsion of six diplomats from each other's countries, with Verma being one of them.

After being expelled, Verma asserted his innocence in an interview with the media. He denied any involvement in Singh's murder and accused the Canadian government of taking action without any evidence. Verma stated that Canada's accusation was entirely based on political motives and was an attempt to undermine the India-Canada bilateral relationship. He also pointed out that the Canadian government was taking action based on intelligence, not evidence, which was irresponsible.

Verma's remarks aroused strong dissatisfaction from Canada. The Canadian government insisted that its accusation was based on concrete evidence and accused the Indian government of taking an uncooperative attitude in dealing with the matter. Prime Minister Trudeau publicly stated that the Indian government's actions were interference in Canada's security and sovereignty and were unacceptable. He also stressed that Canada would continue to firmly uphold its national interests and would not bow to any pressure.

However, Verma did not back down. He continued However, in the face of this challenge, both sides need to remain calm and rational, and seek solutions through dialogue and negotiation. Only in this way can we ensure that our friendly and cooperative relationship is not affected, and a solid foundation for future cooperation is laid.

In the future, Canada and India should continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in economic and trade, cultural and other fields, and jointly promote the continuous development of bilateral relations. At the same time, both sides should also strengthen coordination and cooperation in international affairs and jointly address global challenges to make greater contributions to world peace and development.
