UN: More than 200 Lebanese children have died in the past two months

The U.N. Children's Fund says more than 200 children have been killed and 1,100 injured in Lebanon in the past two months.

"With more than 200 Lebanese children dead in less than two months, a disturbing pattern has emerged of those who have the power to stop this violence turning a blind eye," UNICEF spokesman Jean-Pierre Elder told a news conference in Geneva on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

He noted that this has become a horrifying norm for Lebanese children. "Over the past two months, an average of three children have been killed every day in Lebanon, and many more have been injured and traumatized."

Elder also said there are "eerie similarities" between the conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza.

More than 43,000 people, mostly children, are reported to have been killed in the 13-month war between Israel and Hamas. "Lebanon is very similar to Gaza, where the intolerable seems to be quietly becoming the acceptable."

UNICEF is providing psychosocial support to other children and providing medical supplies, meals and sleep kits to hundreds of thousands of children who have fled the fighting.

Since September, Israel has carried out a massive bombing campaign in Lebanon, mainly targeting Hezbollah positions, but some artillery strikes have hit other areas.
