Tesla Shanghai energy storage super factory officially started

Tesla Shanghai energy storage Gigafactory officially started work in the new Lingang District of Shanghai on Thursday (May 23) afternoon, which is Tesla's first energy storage gigafactory project outside the United States.

According to CCTV news, the plant is expected to be put into operation in the first quarter of 2025, and after putting into operation, the output of Megapack, an ultra-large electrochemical commercial energy storage system, will reach 10,000 units, with an energy storage scale of nearly 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh).

According to reports, this is Tesla's first energy storage gigafactory outside the United States, and it is also another large-scale investment project in China after Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory in the past ten years.

Public information shows that Tesla Shanghai energy storage plant covers a total area of about 200,000 square meters, with a total investment of about 1.45 billion yuan (RMB, about S $270 million).

According to the report, Tesla Shanghai super factory has an annual production capacity of more than 950,000 pure electric vehicles, and is an important production base and export center for Tesla in the world. Lingang New area manufacturing fixed asset investment, the planned industrial output value, the growth rate ranked first in Shanghai, the total volume ranked second in Shanghai.

Shanghai Securities News reported that Tesla also completed the signing of China's first super-large electrochemical commercial energy storage system Megapack with Lingang Group, marking the official start of a new chapter for Tesla's energy storage business in China, and will also help Lingang New area to build a low-carbon city strategy and achieve the "double carbon" goal.

Currently, Tesla energy storage products include Powerwall, Powerpack and Megapack. Shanghai Energy Storage Gigafactory mainly produces super-large commercial energy storage battery Megapack for the global market.
