US President Donald Trump announced on social media Thursday (July 10) evening (Friday morning Singapore time) that a 35% tariff would be imposed on imports from Canada starting from August 1. He also plans to impose a uniform tariff of 15% or 20% on most of his other trading partners.
Reuters reported that in a letter published on Truth Social, Trump informed Canadian Prime Minister Carney that the new tax rate would take effect on August 1 and that the United States would raise tariffs if Canada took retaliatory actions.
Earlier that day, when Trump was interviewed by NBC, he announced that Canada and the European Union would receive tariff letters by Friday (the 11th). He also disclosed that he planned to impose a uniform tariff of 15% or 20% on other trading partners who had not yet received tariff letters.
Trump told NBC, "Not every country or region will receive a tariff notification letter." He said, "We will directly announce the tariff rates that all other countries have to pay, which could be 20% or 15%." We are working on this matter."
As of July 10th, Trump has sent tariff letters to 22 countries, including Canada, and urged them to negotiate concessions as soon as possible to reach a trade agreement with the United States.
