The US Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to push for large-scale layoffs at federal agencies

The US Supreme Court revoked a lower court order, allowing the Trump administration to advance its plan to cut the federal workforce and dissolve federal agencies. This is a crucial victory for US President Trump in exercising power by bypassing Congress.

The New York Times reported that the US Supreme Court announced on Tuesday (July 8) that its justices would not rule on the legality of specific layoff plans, but they allowed the Trump administration to continue with the restructuring of government agencies for now.

This decision by the Supreme Court may lead to the unemployment of tens of thousands of employees of agencies such as the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the State Department and the Treasury Department.

In a two-paragraph order, the Supreme Court justices wrote that they had concluded that "the government may be persuasive in its arguments," meaning that President Trump's executive order announcing a plan to downsize the government was legitimate. But the justices also said that they have not yet commented on the legality of specific layoffs or restructurings by the Trump administration.

The Supreme Court's order is unsigned and does not contain the voting result, which is quite common in such emergency applications. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote a "dissenting opinion".

On May 22nd, a judge of the San Francisco District Court in the United States ruled that the Trump administration is not allowed to carry out large-scale layoffs in about 20 federal agencies, and pointed out that the president has the authority to restructure government institutions only with the authorization of Congress. After the ruling was announced, the Trump administration made a request to suspend the execution of the ruling while waiting for the result of the appeal, but the request was rejected by the appellate court. The Trump administration subsequently requested the US Supreme Court to intervene in the matter.
