日本今年到目前为止已有977人确诊由“食肉”细菌引起的致命疾病，是1999年有记录以来患者人数最多的一年。
日本共同社星期二（6月11日）引述国家传染病研究所报道，日本今年已有977人受到感染，已超出去年全年的941起病例。其中，东京的病例最多，达145人。
被称为“食肉”细菌的“A型溶血性链球菌”，是一种常见的细菌，会透过飞沫和接触传播。感染者经常出现高烧、四肢肿胀和喉咙痛等症状。严重的情况也可能导致多器官衰竭，引发休克导致死亡。
由于感染后会破坏人体肌肉组织，外观看起来像被吃掉一块，因此常称“食人菌”。
东京女子医科大学传染病专业教授菊池健说，足部伤口特别容易受到链球菌细菌感染，水泡和足癣等小伤口可能成为细菌的入口，老年患者从感染到死亡可能只需48小时。
他说，高烧且神志不清，或伤口迅速肿胀是危险的迹象，应立即就医。
