A union representing tens of thousands of workers at South Korea's Samsung Electronics has announced an indefinite general strike in a bid to force management to negotiate.
Yonhap news Agency reported that the national Samsung Electronics labor Union issued a statement on Wednesday (July 10), saying that after learning that management was not willing to negotiate with them after the first strike started, the union decided to go on an indefinite general strike from now on.
The union had planned to go on strike for three days starting Monday (August 8) and for five days starting Monday (October 15).
The main demands of the trade unions include an average 3.5% pay rise for union members; One day off on the anniversary of the establishment of a trade union; Adjust the calculation standard of performance bonus; Compensation for economic losses caused by strikes, etc.
According to the union, 6,540 union members expressed their intention to participate in the general strike, including 5,211 union members engaged in semiconductor equipment, manufacturing, and process development.
Samsung executives said production lines are running normally and there have been no production problems so far.
The national Samsung Electronics Labor Union has 31,000 members, accounting for 24.8 percent of Samsung Electronics' total workforce.
