马来西亚无人申领的遗产已经累计达5亿令吉（约1亿4600万新元）。各相关机构与政府机关一直合作寻找及联络合法继承人，设法将这些遗产交给他们。
负责处理遗产事务的政联公司公共信托有限公司（Amanah Raya，简称公共信托）集团董事经理阿末法依沙告诉《阳光日报》，遗产无人认领的原因包括继承人已经去世、已搬家或地址有误而不知道有遗产待继承。
他说，公共信托追踪继承人的过程中也必须遵守法律，因此面对许多挑战。公共信托一直与国民登记局和社区领袖合作，追踪这些继承人的下落。
他说：“一些案件可追溯至30年前。若继承人最终遍寻不获，回教徒的遗产将纳入回教财库基金（Baitulmal），非回教徒遗产则归国库。”
他指出，许多民众缺乏遗产管理意识而拖延处理遗产事务、提交的资料不完整或不准确，一些继承人不合作或多名继承人发生纠纷，让遗产无人认领的问题雪上加霜。
