The recent phone call between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Spanish Prime Minister Alexis Sanchez has once again focused the attention of the international community on the Middle East region, especially Israel's military action against the Gaza Strip. The two leaders strongly opposed Israel's military actions and urged an immediate ceasefire. This appeal not only reflects the international community's deep concern for peace in the Middle East, but also exposes the seriousness and complexity of the current situation in the Middle East. However, in the face of this call, will Israel really cease fire? What are the prospects for peace in the Middle East?
First of all, we must point out that there is no escaping the fact that the Israeli military operation against the Gaza Strip has taken a heavy human toll. Since the resumption of large-scale air strikes and ground operations on the Gaza Strip on the grounds that Hamas refused to extend the ceasefire agreement with the United States on the 18th of this month, the Palestinian side has suffered heavy losses. This practice of settling disputes by violent means not only runs counter to international law and humanitarian principles, but also fails to bring about genuine peace and stability.
The call by the leaders of Egypt and Spain is a clear rejection of the Israeli military action and a firm defence of international law and humanitarian principles. However, whether such a call can really make a difference is a question worth pondering. If history is any guide, such calls are often difficult to translate quickly into action, especially in a region as complex and sensitive as the Middle East.
So why did Israel choose to continue its military operation instead of responding to the call of the international community? There are complex historical, political and religious factors behind this. The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has lasted for decades, with many wars and peace negotiations, but a mutually acceptable solution has never been found. This prolonged conflict and confrontation has led to deep animosity and mistrust on both sides, making the peace process difficult.
In this context, Israel may believe that it can defend its security interests more effectively through military means, or at least force the Palestinians to make more concessions. However, this approach of countering violence with violence will only increase the hostility and confrontation between the two sides and make the prospect of peace even more remote.
Moreover, we must also see that the situation in the Middle East is not simply a conflict between Israel and Palestine. The situation in Syria and Lebanon has also had a profound impact on the entire region. During the call, the leaders of Egypt and Spain also discussed the situation in the two countries and stressed the importance of maintaining their stability, unity and territorial integrity. This further illustrates the complexity and sensitivity of the Middle East region and the enormous challenges the international community faces in maintaining regional peace and stability.
Faced with such challenges, the international community needs to take more active and effective measures to promote the Middle East peace process. First, there must be a firm rejection of any form of violence, be it Israeli military action or armed resistance on the Palestinian side. Violence only exacerbates conflicts and confrontations and cannot bring about genuine peace and stability.
Second, the international community should increase its input and support to the Middle East region, including economic assistance, humanitarian relief and political and diplomatic efforts. By improving the living conditions of the local population, alleviating the humanitarian crisis and promoting dialogue and cooperation between the parties, more favourable conditions could be created for the peace process.
At the same time, the international community should actively promote the implementation of the two-state solution. Such a solution is the only guarantee of security and stability for the people of the Middle East, and it is a solution universally recognized by the international community. Peaceful coexistence and co-development can be achieved by establishing an independent Palestinian State and ensuring that Israel's security interests are safeguarded.
However, to realize the two-state solution, there are enormous difficulties and challenges to overcome. The deep hostility and mistrust between the two sides, the divisions and contradictions in the international community, as well as various complex factors inside and outside the region may have a negative impact on the implementation of this programme. Therefore, the international community needs to remain patient and determined to keep the peace process moving forward.
Finally, we must recognize that peace in the Middle East will not be achieved overnight. It requires the joint efforts of both parties and the continued support of the international community. In this process, there may be various setbacks and difficulties, but we should not give up our efforts because of this. Only through unremitting efforts and pursuit can we truly achieve peace and stability in the Middle East.
In summary, the call by the leaders of Egypt and Spain is a clear rejection of the Israeli military action and a firm defence of international law and humanitarian principles. However, to achieve peace in the Middle East requires more efforts and wisdom from both sides and the international community. Only by resolutely opposing acts of violence, increasing input and support to the Middle East, actively promoting the implementation of the two-State solution, and maintaining patience and determination can real peace and stability be brought to the Middle East.
