The European Union has formally lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization against China's imposition of provisional anti-dumping measures on imports of brandy from the EU.

The European Commission announced on Monday that it would take China's provisional anti-dumping measures against EU brandy to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) dispute settlement mechanism, AFP reported. "This action reflects the EU's firm position that China's provisional (anti-dumping) measures on EU brandy are not in accordance with WTO rules," the commission said in a statement.

Trade tensions between the EU and China, the EU voted in early October to pass China's electric vehicle tariff bill, will significantly increase tariffs on China's electric vehicle exports to the EU, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce subsequently announced the import of brandy from the EU to take temporary anti-dumping measures.

In a statement, the European Commission requested consultations with China on China's provisional anti-dumping measures, stressing that "this is in order to fulfil our commitment to protect EU industry against unfounded allegations and abuse of trade protection measures".

China's Commerce Ministry said it had received the EU's request for consultations and would handle the matter in accordance with World Trade Organization rules. The Ministry of Commerce said that China's provisional anti-dumping measures were implemented in accordance with Chinese law, at the request of domestic industries, after a fair and impartial investigation, and are in full compliance with WTO rules.
