Putin accused the West of approaching a red line warning it would lift restrictions on missile deployments

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the West was inching closer to Russia's "red line," a line Moscow has made clear it will not tolerate, forcing it to respond.

In a meeting with defense officials on Monday, Putin stressed Moscow's concerns about short - and medium-range missiles being developed and possibly deployed by Washington. He warned that Russia would lift all voluntary restrictions on its own missile deployments if the US moved ahead with the deployment.

He added that Russian forces had taken control of 189 settlements in Ukraine so far this year, but stressed that Russia's nuclear weapons exist only as a deterrent.
