韩国政府正在考虑在《刑法》中增设“不得假释的无期徒刑”，以严正应对恶性犯罪事件。
韩联社报道，韩国法务部星期五（8月4日）发布公告称，将参考美国等国家终身监禁与死刑并存的立法，推动《刑法》增设不可假释的无期徒刑，这无关于宪法法院就死刑存废作出的决定。
韩国政府考虑这么做，或是基于对恶性犯罪的担忧。
星期四（3日）下午近6时，京畿道城南市盆唐区书岘洞百货店发生一起骇人听闻的随机行凶事件，一名22岁男子开车撞行人后持刀下车砍人，造成14人受伤。7月21日首尔地铁新林站也发生一起持刀伤人事件，造成一死三伤。
根据韩国现行法律，即使被判处无期徒刑，服刑20年后也可申请假释审查。
韩国法务部长官韩东勋7月26日在国会法制司法委员会全体会议上，对引进终身刑制表示认同，称社会无法容忍的“怪物”应被永远隔离。执政党国民力量党和政府近期举行闭门会议，决定推动增设终身监禁刑罚，并就此征求意见。
