U.S. Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday.
Trump told reporters Thursday that "President Zelensky has asked to meet with me" and that he would meet with Zelensky at 9:45 a.m. on Friday at Trump Tower in New York.
Trump also reiterated that he could quickly broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. Kiev is concerned that Trump's proposal would involve Ukraine giving up territory already occupied by Russia.
"I am confident that I will be able to broker an agreement between President Putin and President Zelensky very quickly," Trump said.
Trump also said he was unhappy with comments Zelensky made in a recent interview with The New Yorker magazine. Zelensky said in the interview that he believes Trump "does not understand how to make this war end."
He has been critical of the Biden administration's billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine, and on the eve of Mr. Zelensky's arrival in the United States, he continued to criticize Mr. Zelensky's refusal to make a deal with Moscow.
US President Joe Biden has announced an additional $8 billion in military aid to Ukraine. Vice President Harris, a Democratic presidential candidate, later met with Zelensky at the White House and criticized Trump's surrender policy toward Ukraine.
