彭博社报道，星期一（10月23日）早些时候，新德里的空气质量指数攀升至346，是瑞士空气质量技术公司IQ Air追踪的全球110个城市中最高的。孟买的指数也升至177。
德里能源与资源研究所空气质量研究员戈尔说，目前空气质量不佳是由于气温下降和风速缓慢造成的，这阻碍了污染的消散。
根据IQ Air的数据，新德里的悬浮颗粒PM2.5浓度每立方米为296微克，几乎是世界卫生组织标准的每立方米15微克的20倍。芝加哥大学的一项研究显示，悬浮颗粒空气污染使印度人的平均预期寿命缩短5.3年。
印度中央和邦政府出台了一系列政策试图解决空气污染问题，但迄今为止，这些努力都被证明是无效的。
能源和清洁空气研究中心的分析师达希亚说，虽然过去五年里德里周边地区的烧芭清理农地大幅减少，但由于人口增长，包括建筑施工和低效炉灶在内的其他污染源正变得更加严重。
他说，新德里周边运营的发电厂本应安装污染控制装置，但执行不力意味着大多数发电厂尚未这样做。除非有更好的监管和合规性，否则情况可能会变得更糟。
