Indonesia's Ministry of Industry has banned the sale of the latest iPhone 16 series, but travelers are allowed to bring the phones into the country.
According to the Jakarta Globe, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry said in a statement on Saturday (October 26) that the iPhone 16 series carried by passengers and crew or delivered by Courier service can enter Indonesia, but only for personal use and cannot be sold.
However, each passenger is allowed a maximum of two iPhone 16s.
Between August and October, about 9,000 iPhone 16s entered Indonesia via personal baggage and taxes were paid. Authorities stressed that while the phones were legal in Indonesia, they would be considered illegal if they were found to be for sale.
According to the Jakarta Post, Indonesian Industry Minister Agus said on October 22 that Apple has not fulfilled its promise to invest 1.71 trillion rupiah in Indonesia, which is a prerequisite for obtaining a license to sell mobile phones there.
In addition to the investment quota, the authorities also require that at least 40 percent of the components in mobile phones be made in Indonesia, but Apple does not meet this condition.
