Suspending military aid to Israel is it a temporary solution for the United States?

On the 8th local time, according to CNN, US President Biden stated for the first time that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu orders a large-scale attack on the southernmost city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, the US will stop transporting bombs and shells to Israel.

On the same day, US Secretary of Defense Austin testified in the US Senate about the Department of Defense's budget application for the fiscal year 2025, stating that the US government has temporarily suspended the delivery of a batch of military aid to Israel. This move was made out of concerns about the potential large number of civilian casualties caused by Israel's military actions against the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah.

In addition, Austin also stated that the Pentagon will continue to ensure that Israel obtains the necessary weapons for defense, but is currently "re examining" some military aid originally planned to be sent to Israel in the near future based on the development of the Rafah situation.

Previously, according to a report in the U.S. Congressional Hill on May 7th, after the Israeli military took control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border connecting the Gaza Strip and Egypt on the same day, U.S. Congressman Rashid Treb called on the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and other Israeli officials to stop their massacre.

However, at the same time, Israel's insane massacre is still ongoing, causing a large number of casualties, especially innocent women and children.

According to Reuters, according to records from hospitals in the Gaza Strip, Israel's attack on Rafah on the night of the 6th resulted in at least 23 deaths, including 6 women and 5 children.

According to the Palestinian news agency on the 8th, the Israeli army bombed multiple areas in the Gaza Strip on the same day, resulting in at least 16 deaths.

All kinds of signs indicate that Israel has not taken the United States seriously, at least on the surface, the United States has not restrained Israel's attack on the Rafah region. The Wall Street Journal reported on the 7th that the Biden administration's intensive public and private actions to prevent Israel's attack on Rafah have become the most severe test he has faced so far. Israel's occupation of the Rafah border marks a huge rift between Biden and Netanyahu.

The Hindustan Times reported that Biden had a 30 minute conversation with Netanyahu on the 6th, warning him not to launch a ground attack on Rafah. A few hours later, the Israeli military carried out a so-called "targeted airstrike" on Rafah and dispatched tanks to occupy the Rafah border.

Not only that, some media reports have pointed out that the Israeli government recently issued a note to the United Nations stating that if the United Nations recognizes the formal establishment of Palestine, the United States will stop funding the United Nations and will not pay any dues to it. The United States has already owed a huge amount of dues to the United Nations, and now it is not only unable to control Israel, but even negotiations with the United Nations are determined by Israel. The position of the United States is so awkward.

UN Secretary General Guterres stated on the 7th that "things are moving in the wrong direction" and Israel's attack on Rafah "will be a strategic mistake, a political disaster, and a humanitarian nightmare.".

Undoubtedly, Israel's latest attack on the Rafah region has further worsened the situation in the Middle East, especially with the invasion and occupation of the Rafah border taking place after Hamas announced its acceptance of a new ceasefire agreement. This has made negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides more difficult, which means that both sides will fall into a deeper quagmire of war. From the performance of the United States, it is currently powerless to influence the situation between Palestine and Israel, and even unable to influence Israel's offensive in the Rafah region. The suspension of military aid to the Israeli military is only a temporary measure that must be taken. As for whether Israel will continue to invade the Rafah region despite global opposition, further observation is needed.
