Us technology entrepreneur Elon Musk is visiting Indonesia to discuss with Indonesian officials a number of important collaborations, including Starlink Internet services, and to launch Starlink services with President Joko Widodo.
Reuters reported that Musk arrived in Bali on Sunday (May 19). His company, SpaceX, had planned to launch the Starlink Internet service, which the Indonesian government hopes will increase Internet penetration in Indonesia and bring medical services to remote parts of the country.
Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesia's coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment, greeted Musk at the Bali airport on Sunday morning.
In a post on his Instagram account, Luhut said that achieving equal Internet access in Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy with a population of more than 270 million, would allow people in remote areas to enjoy the same fast Internet as in cities. He and Musk will discuss several important collaborations, including the launch of Starlink in Indonesia.
Communications Minister Budi Arie Setiadi said last week that SpaceX's satellite division had received a license to operate in Indonesia and also to provide network services in the country.
Musk will also meet with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and the two sides will launch Starlink on Sunday afternoon at a community health center in Denpasar, the capital of Bali.
Indonesia is the third country in Southeast Asia where Starlink operates, the others being Malaysia and the Philippines.
In addition, Starlink's Internet services are widely used in Ukraine by the military, hospitals, businesses and aid organizations. In February, Ukraine also urged SpaceX to take action to prevent Russia from using Starlink terminals for communications in areas occupied by Russian forces.
