Townsend added that many details about the new plant have not been disclosed, including the total cost and the number of jobs that will be created. The city has also discussed offering tax breaks or other business incentives to xAI to attract projects to Memphis, he said, but details have not been finalized. "There is no question that we have work to do," he said.
Information about the new plant was first reported by the Memphis Daily News. Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the plan.
xAI, a startup founded by Musk in March last year, is currently developing a chatbot called Grok. To catch up with OpenAI, Google and Meta Platforms Inc.
