Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI, the largest electric car and solar panel company in the United States, plans to build a factory in Memphis to house a giant supercomputer. The move is aimed at boosting the company's capabilities in the race to build and supply chatbots and other AI tools.

Ted Townsend, president of the Greater Memphis Chamber, said Musk and his team at xAI have been working with city officials since early March to plan the new plant, which would be "the largest multi-billion dollar investment in the history of Memphis." The Chamber is a non-profit organization funded by the city of Memphis private sector.

Townsend added that many details about the new plant have not been disclosed, including the total cost and the number of jobs that will be created. The city has also discussed offering tax breaks or other business incentives to xAI to attract projects to Memphis, he said, but details have not been finalized. "There is no question that we have work to do," he said.

Information about the new plant was first reported by the Memphis Daily News. Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the plan.

xAI, a startup founded by Musk in March last year, is currently developing a chatbot called Grok. To catch up with OpenAI, Google and Meta Platforms Inc. Musk has made xAI a priority over the past year. The AI chatbot Grok, the company's main product, has been integrated into the social media platform X. According to the product's description, it's a chat machine that "answers questions with a little tact, and a little rebellious spirit."
