Who can stop Israel from invading the Rafah region?

image

Recently, according to US media reports, two Israeli officials stated that in order to prevent Israel from advancing into Rafah, the US government has temporarily suspended the transportation of US made ammunition to Israel. However, even so, there is still no determination to stop Israel's attack on Rafah.

On May 6th local time, the Houthi armed forces issued a statement stating that if Israel attacks Rafah from the ground, they will launch a missile capable of shocking the world and launch a comprehensive and destructive attack on American and Western ships in the Red Sea, Mediterranean, and some European waters. From the current situation, if Israel continues to act unilaterally, there is a high risk of the Israeli Palestinian conflict spilling out of control.

Therefore, there are now two options before Israel: one is to implement a ceasefire in accordance with the mediation agreements of countries such as the United States, Egypt, and Qatar. The second is to continue attacking Rafa by stepping on the red line of the United Nations and the United States. But from the situation since the Israeli Palestinian conflict, and from Israel's style of action, they either don't do it or just do it, which may be Israel's survival law.

Why is the air raid on the Rafah region so sensitive and receiving widespread global attention? The key issue is that Rafa is too small, and its area is about the same as London's Heathrow Airport. Due to the early wars, Israel drove most of the people of Gaza to Rafah, where over one million Palestinians sought refuge. And Israel's bombing and strikes on such areas are completely equivalent to indiscriminate slaughter of civilians.

UN Secretary General Guterres issued a statement on the upcoming Rafah operation, calling on the Israeli government to stop any escalation of force. Guterres said, "I call on the Israeli government to stop any escalation of the situation and actively participate in ongoing diplomatic negotiations," while warning that the Israeli military's attack on Rafah is intolerable and that the United Nations General Assembly may vote on a draft resolution on Palestine's formal accession to the United Nations on the 10th. ".

Since the new round of the Israeli Palestinian conflict, the Israeli Defense Forces have launched Operation Iron Sword in the Gaza Strip, including strikes on civilian targets, resulting in huge casualties and humanitarian disasters. Israel has announced a comprehensive blockade of its enclaves, cutting off supplies of water, electricity, fuel, food, and medicine. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, at least 34000 people have died and over 77000 have been injured.

The Gaza Strip has actually been divided into the south and north, and Rafah is considered the last stronghold of Hamas. Faced with dissuasion and warnings from the United Nations and the United States, Israel has recently stated that it will not stop its combat mission in the northern Gaza city of Rafah and has issued evacuation orders to Rafah refugees.

According to media reports, in the early morning of May 7th local time, Israeli tank brigades had already stormed into Rafah, marking the beginning of Israel's long planned "drive out encirclement and annihilation" operation, indicating a full-scale invasion of the Rafah region. It is reported that at least 100 tanks rushed into the urban area of Rafah, and after the bombing, flames soared into the sky. In addition, the Israeli military also has an artillery brigade and AH-64A/D Apache armed helicopters from the 25th Air Force Wing responsible for providing firepower support.

It seems that despite opposition from numerous allied countries, strict bans from NATO and the United States on Israel's attack on Rafah, as well as pressure from the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, and numerous countries using cutting off diplomatic ties and trade as a bargaining chip to prevent its actions, Israel still launched a ground attack.

On the 7th local time, Hamdan, a member of the Political Committee of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement, stated at a press conference in Beirut, Lebanon that Hamas will demand Israel to withdraw from the Gaza Strip in the proposed ceasefire agreement.

From the current situation, the United States has been caught in a dilemma in its policy towards Israel since the beginning of this year. As the war progresses, although Israel remains the bottom line of the United States' new Middle East policy, the conflict between the United States and Israel has gradually surfaced with the delay of the war. As for whether Israel can stop the pace of massacres under pressure from the United Nations and the United States, further observation is still needed.
