美国将向印度主导的斯里兰卡深水集装箱码头提供5.53亿美元（7.48亿新元）的贷款，资助该项目被视为美国对抗中国在印度洋日益增长的影响力之举。
法新社报道，新的科伦坡西国际码头（Colombo West International Terminal）由印度阿达尼集团（Adani Group）领导的财团所建造，阿达尼承担的成本估计为7亿美元。这个码头紧邻首都庞大港口中，一个由中国运营的类似码头。
新码头预计长1.4公里，水深20公尺，年吞吐量320万个集装箱。美国政府运营的国际开发金融公司宣布，它将为阿达尼领导的项目提供5.53亿美元的资金。
公司总裁斯科特·内森（Scott Nathan）星期三（11月8日）在科伦坡对记者说：“斯里兰卡是世界上重要的转运枢纽之一，约一半的集装箱经过这里。”
斯里兰卡在连接中东和东亚的世界上最繁忙的航线上，其海洋资产具有战略重要性。
斯里兰卡去年在金融危机中破产，但私人开发项目获得的贷款不会增加其主权债务。
