The World Health Organization has evacuated 97 patients from Gaza to the United Arab Emirates for treatment, the largest medical evacuation since the outbreak of the Israel-Kazakhstan war.
Agence France-Presse reported that the WHO's representative in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Gerard Pipper Cohen, said Thursday that the agency launched the operation Wednesday.
The patients and 155 members of their entourage were first transferred from four locations in Gaza to a hospital and later flown to ABU Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, for treatment. The patients included 45 children with a variety of illnesses, including cancer and kidney disease, as well as severe trauma and other injuries.
Who Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the "highly complex operation" was successful despite serious challenges and insecurity.
The World Health Organization estimates that more than 10,000 people are still awaiting emergency medical evacuation.
There were an estimated 13,455 to 17,550 cases of "severe limb injury", the main reason for requiring medical treatment.
The report also shows that there were between 3,105 and 4,050 cases of amputation.
However, only 17 of Gaza's 36 hospitals are currently partially functioning, and basic health services are often suspended or unavailable due to insecurity, attacks and repeated evacuation orders.
