The number of immigration applications in the UK has reached a new high, with a total of 11,084 people seeking asylum, highlighting the intensifying immigration challenges faced by British Prime Minister Stammer.
Bloomberg reported that according to data released by the UK Home Office on Thursday (August 21), the UK received a record 11,084 asylum applications in the past year ending in June, a 14% increase from last year and the highest since statistics began in 1979.
Among them, the largest number of applicants came from Pakistan, followed by Afghanistan, Iran and Eritrea.
Data also shows that the number of illegal immigrants has soared by 27% compared to the previous year, among which 88% entered by small boats. The number of people entering the country by small boat in the first half of this year reached 19,982, a record high, a significant increase from 13,489 in the same period last year.
In addition, the number of immigrants resettled in hotels rose by 8% year-on-year to 32,059. It is worth noting that the number of hotel accommodations in June slightly decreased compared to the end of March, showing a hint of easing.
The government said that the number of hotels accommodating migrants has dropped from a peak of 400 two years ago to about 230.
Previously, the court ruled that the Bell Hotel in Eppin, near London, could not be used to accommodate immigrants without permission. This ruling has prompted several local councils to indicate that they will take similar actions, demanding the withdrawal of migrants who have been accommodated in local hotels.
According to a law of 1999, the Ministry of the Interior "is obligated to provide accommodation and living support to poor asylum seekers during the application period." However, the Stammer government had promised to stop using hotels to house asylum seekers before the end of parliament in 2029.
On the other hand, as of June, the authorities had issued approximately 183,000 work visas, a year-on-year decrease of 36%, but still 33% higher than the same period in 2019.
The main factor for the decline in visas lies in the reduction of visas for medical and nursing positions. Due to concerns that migrant workers might be exploited or deceived, the authorities have completely halted the recruitment of overseas nursing staff since July. Relevant data shows that in the past year, the number of immigrant workers in nursing positions has decreased by 88%, and the number of nursing professionals has dropped by 80%.
In terms of student visas, the authorities issued a total of 414,000, a year-on-year decrease of 4%. Dependent family visas also dropped by 81% to 18,000.
