European Council President Costa said on Tuesday (August 19) that the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union needs to continue, and Europe must participate in future peace talks together with Ukraine, Russia and the United States.
Reuters reported that Costa briefed the council members on the summit held in Washington via video conference.
After the meeting, he told reporters that although there was still a lot of work to be done and there was no guarantee of success, the possibility of a bilateral meeting between Zelensky and Putin itself was a huge step forward.
Now we all need to turn this possibility into reality and ensure the smooth and successful holding of the meeting. He also called for the prompt launch of broader negotiations, involving Europe as well.
Costa also particularly pointed out that it is especially important for Washington to be willing to participate in the security guarantee of Ukraine.
The foundation of future security lies in Ukraine's own armed forces, which still need to be strengthened. He said that Ukraine's future lies not only in security measures but also in the prospects of stability and prosperity that joining the European Union will bring.
Costa added that the EU will continue to pressure Russia to stop the war and is preparing another set of sanctions.
