Hamas has rejected Israel's new terms for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, casting doubt on the chances of the latest US-backed proposal to end the 10-month Gaza war.
In an interview with Hamas-owned Al-Aqsa TV on Sunday, Hamas official Osama Hamdan said Israel had reneged on its promise to withdraw from the "Philadelphia Corridor" on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, and had imposed other new conditions, including screening of displaced Palestinians at the start of the ceasefire. Because they will return to the more densely populated northern regions.
"We will not accept the withdrawal of the agreement we reached on July 2 or participate in discussions on new conditions," Hamdan said.
In a statement Sunday, Hamas political Bureau member Ahmed Rishq called on Israel to abide by a cease-fire plan it received in July based on a proposal by U.S. President Joe Biden and relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions, Xinhua reported.
The statement said the Hamas delegation left the Egyptian capital late Sunday after meeting with mediators Egypt and Qatar to hear the results of the negotiations.
Hamas is willing to implement the ceasefire plan it received in July, based on the Biden proposal and relevant Security Council resolutions, in a manner that serves the best interests of the people of Gaza and stops the aggression against the people of Gaza.
The Hamas delegation stressed its position that any agreement must include a permanent ceasefire, a complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the free return of Gaza residents to their homes and the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, as well as the release of detainees.
On August 15, a new round of Gaza ceasefire talks was held in Doha, the capital of Qatar, suspended on the 16th, and then resumed in Cairo. Mediators the United States, Qatar and Egypt issued a joint statement on the 16th, saying that the United States submitted a new plan based on the points of the previous plan.
Hamas said in a statement on the 18th that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is still setting obstacles to reaching a ceasefire agreement and proposing new conditions, and the new plan is the same as the conditions put forward by Netanyahu, especially his refusal to a permanent ceasefire and a full withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and insisting on continuing to occupy the "Philadelphia Corridor" and other places. In addition, Netanyahu has set new conditions on the exchange of detainees, which has blocked a deal.
