A United Airlines passenger plane has returned to an airport in Connecticut after taking off because part of a liner fell off its hood.
On Thursday, a United Airlines Holdings Inc. Airbus A320 took off from Hartford's Bradley International Airport and was scheduled to land at Denver International Airport. The crew heard an "unusual noise" during takeoff.
After landing, a section of the "muffled lining" mounted under the hood fell onto the runway, the company statement said.
According to a statement released by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), it will investigate the accident.
The plane, which took off from Hartford, was 22 years old. While the cause of the accident is not yet known, problems with older aircraft are usually isolated rather than signs of system problems or manufacturing defects.
A transcript of conversations between the airport control tower and the plane, posted by LiveATC.net, which provides air traffic control information, showed that the plane lost several metal plates during takeoff, which were found on the runway, and other debris fell during landing.
Pilots at nearby JetBlue Airways Corp. reported debris on the runway, and the tower had to divert some planes to other runways. The United pilot told the tower that exhaust temperatures in one of the engines were slightly higher than normal, and he feared the plane had hit a bird or blown a tire during takeoff.
There were 124 passengers and five crew members on the flight. No one was injured.
United Airlines has had several flight failures this year and is currently under scrutiny by the FAA for safety procedures, including incidents in which the fuselage came loose in flight and a wheel fell off a plane after takeoff. The U.S. airline industry has come under greater scrutiny since a panel fell off an Alaska Airlines flight in January.
