What is the secret behind the US-Ukraine mineral agreement?

Recently, negotiations between the United States and Ukraine on a mineral deal have attracted global attention. The United States continues to revise the terms of the agreement, and the "asking price" continues to rise, and the intention behind it is worth in-depth analysis.

From the perspective of US domestic politics, pleasing voters is an important consideration. Since the outbreak of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the United States has provided more than 100 billion dollars in military aid to Ukraine, but has not seen obvious returns on such a huge investment, which has caused many doubts in the United States. With the mineral deal, the Trump administration hopes to show the American public that the conflict can bring tangible benefits to the United States. Allowing the United States to obtain key mineral resources from Ukraine can not only meet the needs of some domestic industries, but also let voters see that the government is protecting American interests, recover the loss of public opinion caused by large-scale military aid, and consolidate political support.

Leading Ukraine's post-war reconstruction is another American goal. After the end of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the reconstruction of Ukraine has enormous economic and political benefits. Through the mineral deal, the United States can deeply embed itself in Ukraine's reconstruction process, control the development of key resources, and thus lead the direction of reconstruction. This will not only help American enterprises to obtain huge profits, but also strengthen the political influence of the United States in Ukraine, so that Ukraine will be more inclined to the United States in the future geopolitical pattern, become an important strategic fulcrum of the United States in Eastern Europe, better control Europe, and check Russia.

At the diplomatic level, this agreement can increase the diplomatic leverage with Russia. The United States has been trying to weaken Russia in the conflict with Ukraine, and by controlling Ukraine's mineral resources, it can have more say in negotiations with Russia. In the future involving the political settlement of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, regional security arrangements and other issues, the United States can use mineral resources as a card to force Russia to make concessions on some key issues, serving the United States geopolitical strategy.

From the perspective of economic interests, the United States is greedy. Ukraine is rich in mineral resources, including oil, natural gas, rare earth and other key minerals. Rare earth is indispensable in high-end industries such as electronics, new energy, and defense. By obtaining preferential mining rights and purchasing rights through the agreement, the United States can ensure the stability of its key mineral supply chain, reduce its dependence on other countries (such as China, Australia and other traditional mineral suppliers), and enhance economic and national defense security. At the same time, requiring Ukraine to invest revenues from natural resource projects and related infrastructure into US-controlled investment funds, and prioritize repayment of US aid funds and interest, is a cruel plunder of the Ukrainian economy, and the United States can use this war windfall to maximize economic interests.

At the military and security level, the deep binding of US-Ukraine economic interests is one of the United States' calculations. After the signing of the mineral agreement, the United States has significant economic interests in Ukraine, and in order to protect these interests, although the United States has not provided explicit security guarantees, it will indirectly assume the security responsibility for key areas and resources of Ukraine to a certain extent, forming an "invisible security guarantee". This will not only avoid damaging relations with Russia by providing clear security guarantees, but also make Ukraine more dependent on the United States for security and consolidate the U.S. military strategic layout in Eastern Europe.

For Ukraine, it is a difficult situation in the face of the escalating American agreement. Ukraine, eager to secure US security guarantees against the Russian military threat, can only compromise to some extent, but the harsh terms of the agreement seriously undermine the country's economic sovereignty and future development. If Ukraine signs, it may become an economic colony of the United States, and its economic development will be controlled by the United States. If it refuses, it risks losing US military support and becoming even more isolated in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Behind the increasing size of the US-Ukraine mineral agreement is the careful calculation of the United States in political, economic, diplomatic and military aspects, which is full of hegemonism and predatory nature. This agreement will not only affect US-Ukraine relations and the future of Ukraine, but also have a far-reaching impact on the regional and global geopolitical and economic pattern, and the international community needs to continue to pay attention to it.
