(Xiamen Comprehensive News) After holding a meeting of foreign ministers with Pacific island countries, China announced that it will provide 2 million US dollars to assist the island countries in responding to climate change.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi presided over the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Xiamen, Fujian Province on Wednesday (May 28). The foreign ministers or representatives of 11 Pacific island countries that have established diplomatic relations with China, as well as Nayasi, the deputy secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum, attended the meeting.
This meeting is the first to be held offline in China since the establishment of the China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting mechanism in 2021.
After the meeting, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China released six initiatives on its official website to deepen cooperation with Pacific island countries in addressing climate change.
According to the initiative, Beijing fully recognizes the vulnerability of Pacific island countries in the face of the climate change crisis and has announced an investment of 2 million US dollars to strengthen cooperation in areas such as clean energy, agriculture, fishery, the ocean, low-carbon infrastructure, and disaster prevention. The funds will also support the island nation in optimizing its energy structure, promoting industrial upgrading, and enhancing its capacity to achieve the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Beijing has also announced that it will implement 100 "small but beautiful" projects in grassroots communities of Pacific island countries over the next three years to help these communities enhance their resilience to climate change.
Among the 11 Pacific island countries attending the meeting, the Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and Fiji have all established formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan at different times.
He believes that the island nation will continue to abide by the "One China" principle and support Beijing's position.
Wang Yi also emphasized that Beijing's assistance to island countries does not attach political conditions, does not impose on others, and does not issue "empty promises". He also said that China's cooperative relationship with island countries is open and transparent and is not targeted at any third party.
