Three days of torrential rain in South Korea have damaged homes, roads and infrastructure and forced the evacuation of more than 1,500 people.
The Korea Herald reported that the heavy rainfall lasted from the afternoon of September 19 to September 21, starting in Jeju Island and then expanding to the whole of South Korea.
Rainfall was about 10 cm per hour in the southern and western coastal areas of South Korea, 5 cm to 8 cm per hour in the southern areas and Chungcheong and South provinces, and more than 50 cm per hour in the coastal areas of North Gyeongsang and South provinces and in the mountainous areas of Jeju Island.
Accumulative rainfall in the southern region, Jeju Island, Chungbuk Province, and eastern Gangwon Province was about 20 to 30 cm, with extreme levels in many areas.
South Korea's Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters reported that as of Sunday morning, 1,014 households in seven cities and 46 districts had evacuated a total of 1,501 people, of whom 682 were staying in temporary shelters, relatives' homes or community centers.
In addition, as of the same morning, a total of 77 passenger ships on 55 sea routes were stranded, 16 flights were canceled, and 641 road sections, 39 underpasses, 3,061 riverfront areas and 38 roads in 22 national parks were impassable due to the weather.
Authorities received 107 reports of road flooding, 21 reports of soil loss, 170 flooded homes, 26 flooded buildings, and a retaining wall collapsed. A sinkhole and other road damage appeared in Busan s Sasang-gu on the 21st.
About 4,116 hectares of crops were damaged, an area about 14 times the size of Seoul's Yeouido financial district.
