Selangor to cull 76,000 pigs infected with African swine fever

The Selangor Veterinary Department said that since January 28 this year, out of about 250,000 pigs in 114 pig farms in the state, about 76,000 pigs in 56 pig farms have been infected with African swine fever. The e authorities aim to completely destroy the sick pigs in stages by early March.

According to the "Daily News" reported that the director of the Selangor Veterinary Department, Hasouzana, held a press conference at the headquarters of the Selangor Veterinary Department in Shayanan on Tuesday (February 25) and said: "About 50 percent of pigs infected with African swine fever will die from the disease. The other 50 percent must be destroyed."

She said the veterinary bureau had destroyed 668 pigs on the 5th of this month and had destroyed another 1,200 by 2 p.m. on Tuesday. She stressed that ASF was only found in Kala Leng Nak and Sepang districts as they were the only districts in the state with pig farms.

"The Selangor Veterinary Department on Tuesday completed the inspection of all 114 pig farms in the state and the results showed that pigs from 56 farms were infected with African swine fever," she said. No infection has been found in pigs from other farms."

Khasouzana pointed out that the rapid spread of African swine fever in the 56 pig farms is because these farms are quite close to each other, only about half a kilometer to a kilometer.

She said the 56 farms must destroy the sick pigs within seven days or face legal action. "Our goal is to completely destroy all 76,000 pigs in March in a phased manner."
