世界卫生组织总干事谭德塞说，当局正在追踪数种冠病变种毒株，包括在英国和美国传播的新型冠病变种毒株EG.5。
路透社报道，谭德塞星期三（8月9日）说：“出现更危险变种的风险依然存在，这种变种病毒可能导致冠病染疫和死亡人数突然增加。”
世卫组织当天也发布了一套关于冠病的长期建议，敦促各国继续报告冠病数据，特别是死亡率和发病率数据，并继续提供疫苗接种。
根据美国疾病控制预防中心（CDC），EG.5变种毒株目前是美国冠病病例的主流，占总病例的百分比从7月初的7.5%，到8月4日增至17.3%，两周里增加了5%，超过XBB变种毒株，而美国冠病住院人数再次上升，但远不及以前的峰值。
专家称，EG.5是全球传播最快的变种病毒之一，也是奥密克戎（Omicron）变种亚群中的一员，近几个月和其他群内变种株竞相出头。
