A residential building in the suburbs of New Delhi, India, collapsed on Saturday (April 19th), killing at least 11 people, including three children.

AFP reported that the accident occurred in the northeastern part of New Delhi, an area mainly inhabited by migrant workers. The rescue team is still looking for survivors in the ruins.

According to NDTV, a total of 11 people were pronounced dead, another 11 were rescued and sent to the hospital, and currently five are receiving treatment.

Indian Prime Minister Modi said that he was saddened by the loss of life. I express my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Wish the injured person a speedy recovery.

Indian President Mulmu said, "It is very sad that many people, including women and children, have lost their lives."

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party led by Modi recently won the Delhi state election, which was the first victory in nearly three decades.

At present, the cause of the building collapse is still unclear.

Delhi Minister Mishra blamed the collapse of such buildings on the corrupt practices of the municipal government governed by a hostile party. He said on X: "The construction of such illegal buildings is in full swing."

He added, "It is necessary to investigate all illegal buildings and take strict measures."

Local media reported that the four-storey building "collapsed like a stack of playing cards".

Building collapses are not uncommon in India, and illegal construction is also common in big cities, which are usually the residences of migrant workers.
