Trump rejects Iran proposal - US-Iran ceasefire adds more uncertainties

US President Trump flatly rejected the conditions proposed by Iran for ending the war, which has raised the possibility of renewed fighting between the US and Iran just one month after they reached a temporary ceasefire agreement.

On Sunday (May 10th), Trump responded to the ceasefire conditions proposed by Iran. He wrote on the social media platform Truth Social: "I don't like it. I simply cannot accept it."

Trump did not disclose the details of the new proposal from Iran. However, Iranian official media reported that the Iranian side, through the mediation of Pakistan, responded to the ceasefire proposal put forward by the US. The key condition was to stop all military operations on all fronts, especially on the border with Lebanon.

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Bagae said on Monday (11th) that Iran's demands include ending the wars in the entire region, the United States lifting the maritime blockade, and unfreezing Iran's overseas assets. "We are not asking for any concessions. Our sole demand is Iran's legitimate rights."

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal citing sources, Iran is willing to dilute some of its highly enriched uranium and transfer the remainder to a third country. However, it demands guarantees that in case the negotiations fail, the transferred uranium will be returned to Iran. It has also explicitly ruled out the possibility of dismantling the nuclear facilities.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said in an interview aired by CBS on Sunday that the war could only end if Iran's uranium enrichment stockpile was cleared and its nuclear facilities were dismantled.

When discussing the relationship between Israel and the United States, he said that Israel is now capable of standing on its own, so its reliance on the United States should be reduced to zero, and the United States should be transformed from an aid provider to a partner. He hopes to gradually end the US financial support for the Israeli military over the next 10 years.

"We should gradually reduce our reliance on military support from the Pentagon. Let's start right now and complete this task within 10 years."

According to the current plan, the United States will provide Israel with 3.8 billion US dollars in military aid each year from 2018 to 2028.

On the other hand, Iran warned Britain and France that if they sent warships to the Strait of Hormuz, Iran would respond "decisively and directly".

Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabad said on Sunday that in both war and peace times, only Iran can ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz and prevent any other country from intervening. Any foreign military deployment under the pretext of protecting shipping will only exacerbate the crisis and militarize the Strait of Hormuz.

France previously announced that it would send the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Britain also indicated that it would cooperate by sending additional warships.

French President Macron clarified during his visit to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, on Sunday that France has never planned to deploy its navy in the Strait of Hormuz. France merely intends to coordinate with Iran on how to ensure the safe passage of ships through the strait.

He said that France opposes any party imposing a blockade and also opposes any charges being imposed on ships for using the strait.

The British government announced on the same day that Britain and France will chair a meeting of defense ministers on Tuesday (the 12th) to discuss military plans for restoring trade flow in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the British, more than 40 countries will send officials to attend this international conference.
