Macron: Two French citizens returned home after being placed under house arrest in Iran for over three years

French President Macron said that two French citizens who had been detained by Iran on charges of espionage for over three years had departed for home from Iran on Tuesday.

AFP reported that since November last year, when 41-year-old Cécile Kohler and 72-year-old Jacques Paris were released, they have been under house arrest at the French embassy in Tehran. The uncertainty regarding their future has increased after the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict.

On Tuesday (April 7th), Macron posted on social media: "Colle and Paris have been released and are on their way back to France. They were detained in Iran for three and a half years."

A unnamed French Foreign Ministry source said that the two individuals left Iran with the French diplomatic mission and the French ambassador on Tuesday, "and are currently in Azerbaijan."

Koller and Paris were both teachers, and Paris had already retired. They were arrested in May 2022 while concluding their trip to Iran. Their families claimed that this trip was purely for tourism.

Last October, an Iranian court sentenced Parizi to 17 years in prison and Kolaei to 20 years for espionage. Both were released in November last year.
