German Chancellor Mertz said that Germany has resumed negotiations with Iran after Iran and the United States reached a fragile ceasefire agreement that might facilitate peace talks.
Mertz told reporters: "After a long period of silence (we had good reasons for doing so), our government is now restarting negotiations with Tehran." He also added that this move would "be carried out in coordination with the United States and our European partners."
Mertz held a press conference on domestic and foreign policy issues on Thursday (April 9th). He said that Israel's ongoing military operation in Lebanon might endanger the peace negotiations between the United States and Iran regarding the war in the Middle East.
AFP quoted Mertz as saying: "We are particularly concerned about the situation in southern Lebanon... The brutality of Israel's war in this region could lead to the failure of the entire peace process. Such a situation must not occur."
Mertz also said that resolving the Middle East crisis through diplomacy is beneficial for safeguarding Germany's fundamental interests. Reuters quoted him as saying that he has called US President Trump and urged him to start negotiations with Iran as soon as possible.
