The United States and Bahrain are pushing for the passage of the draft or seeking authorization to use force against Iran

Three Western diplomats said that members of the UN Security Council will start discussions on a draft resolution supported by the United States and Bahrain on Tuesday.

Reuters reported that this draft proposal calls for imposing sanctions on Iran and may authorize the use of force, provided that Tehran stops its attacks and threats on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Previously, a draft resolution proposed by Bahrain received support from the United States, seemingly paving the way for the legalization of its military actions against Iran. However, it failed to pass due to the vetoes cast by Russia and China.

The new draft adopts a more cautious approach, avoiding the use of explicit language authorizing the use of force, but still acting in accordance with Chapter VII of the UN Charter. Chapter VII allows the Security Council to take a series of measures ranging from sanctions to military action.

The resolution condemns Iran for allegedly violating the ceasefire agreement, and also condemns its "continued actions and threats to close, obstruct, restrict or otherwise interfere with the legitimate exercise of navigation rights and freedoms through the Strait of Hormuz", including the laying of mines.

The resolution states that these actions pose a threat to international peace and security, and demands that Iran immediately cease its attacks, disclose the locations of all mines, and refrain from hindering the demining operations.

The resolution also calls on Tehran to cooperate with the United Nations to establish a humanitarian corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, and points out that the transportation of aid supplies, fertilizers and other essential goods has been hindered.

The UN Secretary-General will report on the implementation of the various measures within 30 days. If Iran fails to comply with the resolution, the Security Council will reconvene to review other measures, including the possibility of imposing sanctions.

The diplomat said that Washington hopes to conclude the negotiations as soon as possible, release the final draft by May 8th, and hold the vote early next week. However, Russia and China are still considering their own drafts.
